We
believe in the use of health screenings for all of the dogs in our family, as well as any puppy that is produced here, whether
or not they reside here in the future. Every breed of dog has the potential for various health issues, and the American Staffordshire
Terrier is certainly not excluded from that. However, we feel that with the use of health screenings as a tool in our breeding
program, we hope to minimize the possibility of a serious health issue in any subsequent puppies we may produce by choosing
parents that have been screened for issues we feel are prevalent in our breed, to allow the resulting puppies to have a better
percentage of also being clear of those health issues. The absolute minimum we require for testing at this time are hip and
heart certification. However, we are currently also screening for elbows, eyes and temperament.
We
believe in breeding our females at a slightly older age than what the average breeder begins at. Our preference is to wait
until the female is approximately 3-5 years of age before being bred for the first time. We feel this allows us a good
time frame to carefully monitor her, as well as her siblings, ½ siblings, parents and grandparents for potentially heartbreaking
health issues that may not show up when they are just 2-3 years of age. We understand that there is still a possibility that
a potentially fatal health concern/issue may arise after that 3-5 year timeframe as well, but in being able to carefully observe
her relatives and ancestors during that time, we feel it allows us a safer blueprint with which to work.
We
believe in allowing ourselves a good amount of time with each litter and/or individual, so we do not purposely plan(barring
any unforseen or unique circumstances) to whelp more than one litter per year in our home. We like to carefully follow
the lives of each puppy we have whelped and want to offer them all the individual time and effort we feel they deserve,
and do not want that time interrupted with an additional litter. We also believe in watching each puppy produced carefully,
monitoring their development for the first 12-18 months, observing how their structure may change (good or bad) as they begin
to mature. This allows us to determine whether or not our female is producing pups we feel are structurally equal to or better
than herself, and will help us to decide if we will breed her a second time. We feel it also helps to guide us in the decision
of using the same stud dog or a different one, to assist in producing the best possible structure in our puppies.
We
like to assist in educating any/all new potential owners of this wonderful breed. We talk at length to all interested parties
regarding the pros and cons of owning this breed. We make them aware of the BSL associated with this breed and how to promote
responsible ownership. We assist them in locating puppy training and obedience courses offered in their area and highly recommend
that they attend not only an introductory course, but perhaps even an intermediate course as well. This breed loves to please,
is very eager to learn, and can be such a treasure to own and work with, we feel that taking advantage of these classes is
extremely rewarding. We are more than happy to assist any new owner that may be interested in a show career for their new
puppy as well. We can assist you in training your puppy for the show ring, inform you of any upcoming shows in your area that
you may like to attend, and will eagerly assist you in handling the puppy in the show ring as well if you would like us to.
We will always be here for guidance for the life of any puppy we produce. We appreciate any and all updates on a regular basis
concerning the health and well being of your new puppy, all of your new milestones you have reached, and welcome any questions
you have regarding any issues you feel need clarification.
